Variety - the Children’s Charity
Helping Aussie kids have a fair go!
We have chosen to support Variety - the Children’s Charity. Variety is dedicated to helping Aussie kids have a fair go, assisting them to attain their full potential regardless of ability or background. Each year, thousands of children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs, get support from Variety when they need it the most.
Thanks to the generosity and commitment of the Variety community, for over 40 years Variety – the Children’s Charity has given Aussie kids a fair go through grants of equipment and services, Variety Heart Scholarships and experiences.
In 2018, Variety gave 111,712 kids assistance through:
- Equipment that helps kids with their mobility, like wheelchairs, walking aids, Sunshine Coaches and modified vehicles.
- Expensive medical equipment and services including insulin pumps, wigs, feeds, oxygen pumps and more.
- Technology, programs and Variety Heart Scholarships that help kids discover their talents and unlock all the joys of education and communication.
- Experiences and events to engage and bring joy to kids in need and their families.
Variety – the Children’s Charity was founded in 1928 when eleven men involved in the show business industry met at their social club named “Variety Club”. On Christmas Eve, a baby girl is left abandoned on the club’s doorstep at the Sheridan Square Film Theatre in Pittsburgh with a note which reads:
“Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have eight others. My husband is out of work. She was born on Thanksgiving Day. I have always heard of the goodness of showbusiness people and pray to God that you will look after her. Signed, a heartbroken mother.”
Despite an extensive search, the mother is never found. The men informally adopt the baby and name her Catherine Variety Sheridan. They go on to pay for the Catherine’s education and upbringing. This prompts the club to start raising funds for other disadvantaged children and Variety – the Children’s Charity is born.
